🥬🥬 Spring into Salad Season🥬🥬 ~A Few Words From Susan~ |
Here in Massachusetts, early plants are starting to pop up up. The herbs and veggies I grow on my windowsill seem to have new life, and everything feels light and fresh.
Â
Having just come back from several weeks in Italy, I have a renewed appreciation for what really fresh ingredients can do for a meal.
Â
You'll be hearing about things I learned on that trip in the coming weeks, but for now it seems a good time to talk about salads - how to select which vinegar to use, how to balance greens, proteins, and fats, and how to

Tip for Today |
Add a surprising crunch to your salad by tossing in some toasted nuts or seeds.  Not only will this add texture to your salad, but it will also provide some extra protein and healthy fats, making it a more satisfying and nutritious meal. |

Readers' Salad Tips  |
Ellen from Cleveland writes, "Don't be afraid to mix textures in your salads. A combination of something creamy, like avocado, with something crunchy, like toasted nuts or seeds, can elevate your salad experience. It's all about finding that perfect balance that suits your palate." Marco from San Francisco suggests, "Dress your salad just before serving to maintain the freshness and crispiness of your greens. A little trick is to put the dressing at the bottom of the bowl, add your salad ingredients on top, and then toss just before it's time to eat. This keeps everything vibrant and lively." Julia from Austin recommends, "Experiment with seasonal ingredients to keep your salads exciting and fresh. Each season brings its own bounty of fruits and vegetables, offering an ever-changing palette to work with. Not only does this practice support local farmers, but it also ensures you're enjoying produce at its peak flavor." Samantha from New York advises, "Always remember to season your salads. A little sprinkle of salt and a dash of pepper can go a long way in enhancing the natural flavors of your ingredients. It's a simple step that's often overlooked, but it makes a significant difference in the final taste." Liam from Chicago shares, "Create your own dressings to avoid the preservatives and excess sugar found in many store-bought versions. Basic vinaigrettes are easy to whip up with ingredients you likely already have, like olive oil, vinegar, mustard, and herbs. This small step can transform your salads into a truly homemade masterpiece." |
